South Africa's leading female marathon runner, Rene Kalmer, has channelled all her focus this year on one race – the Olympic marathon. Kalmer, 31, has competed five times over the classic 42.2km distance, but made a major breakthrough in Yokohama in November, clocking two hours, 29 minutes,
Caster Semenya, South Africa's former 800m women's world champion, will scale back her competitive races this year so that she is in perfect shape for the London Olympics, her agent said on Friday. 
For the first time in the history of South African athletics two major national championships have been combined to form one big event under the Athletics South Africa umbrella.
Irish Ultra marathon runner Richard Donovan broke his own record after he completed 7 marathons on 7 different continents in 4 days, 22 hours and 3 minutes, breaking his previous record that stood at 5 days, 10 hours and 8 minutes.
